The large epidemiological transformation which has been occurring in oral health in Brazil shows a decrease in dental caries and a high prevalence of malocclusion, thereby making it necessary to adopt orthodontic procedures in public health. However, health services in the country still lacks financial support to provide basic dental care, mainly in orthodontics. From this context emerged the Extension Project of "Continuing Education in Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontic ", with the objective of solving the demand of pediatric patients with malocclusion, as well as to promote the qualification of graduate students with theoretical and practical information that allows training in the same field of Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontic. Patients in the Extension Project are from the clinical Graduation Discipline Children's Clinic II of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, where orthodontic treatment has started. Since it was established in 2003, the project has attended to 220 patients (to the first half of 2013). The major malocclusions treated are: anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, crowding, early loss of deciduous teeth, and skeletal class II and III. The therapeutic approach is performed according to diagnosis of each case through the use of various types of apparatus for purposes of preventing or intercepting these various malocclusions. Initiatives like this minimize the deficiencies in providing orthodontic services to the population, linking teaching and research with outreach activities aimed at the community, helping to reaffirm the social role of the Public University. Our ambition is to continue the project so that it can maximize the benefits generated, with a greater supply of high quality service to the whole community as well as provide opportunity for undergraduate research, learning and clinical experience for undergraduates and graduate students in the field of Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontics.
