Abstract

The goal of this study was to provide high school students an understanding about macro invertebrate communities inhabiting macrophytes and sediment of a river in southern Amazonas state, Brazil. Ten students who have excelled in Biology, followed the entire process of study of macroinvertebrates such as: collecting, sorting and identifying. Macrophytes were collected with a square of 0.09 m2 and a 0,025 m2Van Veen dredge type. We identified five Taxa in macrophytes and sediment: Chironomidae, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, and Oligochaeta. We concluded that the project allowed students a better understanding of the macroinvertebrate community living in the river located near the participating school project, as well as a greater understanding of the concepts of Limnology. This study can encourage students in research activities, as well as demonstrate the importance of local fauna for aquatic ecosystem preservation.
