Abstract

Despite the great ecological, economic, and social importance of insects, they are mainly known either for causing damage or for their benefits to human society, creating a dualistic concept of insects that is largely pejorative. To reduce the perpetuation of this trend and develop a better understanding of these organisms, the "Insects in School" project has developed a series of activities and educational resources to assist in meeting this goal. We established points of interaction with the school community of Feira de Santana by building a Didactic Entomological Collection and producing illustrative panels about the insects for easier visual communication. These materials were used in visits of groups of students (mainly aged 3-5 years) and in activities outside the Entomology Laboratory of UEFS, during which presentations of the collection were made, together with the development of entertaining and educational activities that addressed the entomological theme. We observed a high level of misinformation of most students concerning the class Insecta, but also a great curiosity about insects. The unbiased approach, with use of attractive teaching materials, sparked positive responses in relation to the insects. In conclusion, appropriate teaching materials, plus the teacher's positive attitude, can bring information and contribute to the reduction of erroneous preconceived ideas about insects.
