Dog populations are a public health problem in all of Brazil, causing inconveniences to the community. Their control is based on actions such as surgical sterilization, updating legislation and education regarding responsible ownership of these animals. Surgical sterilization is the technique traditionally used for reproductive control of males. Currently there are alternatives with a lower cost and simpler than surgical sterilization of males. This study has as its objective evaluating the acceptance and level of satisfaction of owners in relation to chemical sterilization as a definitive contraceptive method for their dogs, together with the use of an identification microchip in a low income neighborhood of Redenção da Serra-SP. It was carried out during a day of free chemical sterilization in male dogs belonging to owners in the neighborhood. The injection was intratesticular in both testicles of the animals. All the sterilized dogs were identified with microchips implanted in the subcutaneous area in the interescapular region. Between three and seven days after the injection, the technical team returned to the homes and gave a questionaire to the owners of the sterilized animals to evaluate the perception after the use of the product. The questionaire covered principally questions about the size and age of the animal and the level of satisfaction with chemical sterilization. 23 dogs were sterilized, 35.4% of the total male dog population of the neighborhood. The size and the age of the sterilized animals varied. The majority of the owners (95.65%) considered the method good (47.82%) or excellent (47.82%) for castration of males. Chemical sterilization associated with identification with a microchip had a satisfactory acceptance by the residents and was considered a useful method with the objective is the sterilization of animals in a simple, practical and low cost manner.
