Depression and failure indices in the initial stage of smoking treatment

This study aimed to investigate to what extent there is an association between depressive symptomatology and the performance of smokers in the initial stage of treatment to quit smoking. Methodology: Sample composed of 96 patients referred from a smoking treatment program, near a hospital in the interior of São Paulo State. The following were used: a structured questionnaire to survey the sociodemographic characteristics and pattern of tobacco consumption of smokers and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) for the evaluation of depressive symptoms. Data collection was performed before the first session. The relationship between BDI-II scores and the success rate was investigated at the end of the fourth therapeutic session. Results: Female smokers obtained, on average, higher scores in the BDI-II (p= 0.001). There was no significant association between depressive symptoms and treatment approval rates at the end of the fourth therapeutic session (p=0.067). Conclusions: No relationship was found between the performance of smokers in the initiation stage of smoking treatment and the scores in the BDI-II. The difference between the percentages of pathological and non-pathological patients who managed to quit smoking is borderline or close (p=0.069); however, the non-pathological group was more successful.References
