The number of people with stress and anxiety symptoms has been growing steadily and consistently. These phenomena are also present in schools, leading students to present learning problems. These manifestations are characterized by the loss of homeostasis, which causes the body alertness. In view of this it is important to study non-drug alternatives of stress and anxiety control. Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese therapeutic martial art that has been studied as an aid in reducing stress and anxiety. The objective of this study was to verify if the Tai Chi Chuan is capable of reduce the stress and the anxiety in elementary school children. To achieve this goal, we implemented a methodology that consisted of recruiting volunteers from 2 classes from the 9th grade year of elementary school, composing a group of 34 students (16 males and 18 females, as mean age at 14 years). A room was chosen randomly to compose the test. They practiced Zhanzhuang, a basic Chen-style Tai Chi Chuan exercise, and the other group performed stretching exercises. The exercises were offered 3 times a week, with sessions of 20 minutes during the classes. Twenty sessions were performed during the months of August to October 2017. The IDATE Trace and State tests were applied to evaluate the anxiety levels, and the ESI - Stress Test for Childhood Stress was applied to measure the stress levels. These tests were applied in two moments: pre-intervention and post-intervention. The results obtained suggest that the practice of Tai Chi Chuan decreased stress in the test group but did not reduce anxiety in this group. After the application of the post-intervention tests, a questionnaire was applied to evaluate students' perceptions about the exercises and the feedback was very positive, stating that these interventions would have helped them to improve their performance in the classroom and during the exams period. We conclude that Tai Chi Chuan was effective for the management of stress in the school context.
