Abstract

This dissertation is the result of a research project, with six men living in São Paulo City and who are connected with cultural institutions and companies. One of them is working and is also involved in volunteer work, four men are retired, but they hold paying jobs, and another man is retired and does volunteer work as well. The criteria used to choose the subjects was the following: over 60 years of age, active life, good memory and disposition to talk about their life experiences related to their aging process. The research object was the meanings they attributed to their aging process, work relations, point of view on slavery and affective relations. Its purpose was to understand how these black men constructed their own social space and, more specifically, in the city of São Paulo community. The methodological proceeding was based on data collection by on d semi-structured recorded interviews. The analysis of the answers unveiled that Brazilian society prejudicious and discriminatory against black people, something that made it was clear in the narrative about periods phases of their lives, mainly, referring to professional life and the difficulties to enter and remain the working market. The research made evident that education is the instrument to overtake the barriers on that present the democratic exercise and full citizenship in the social and working arenas.
