Oral health is a fundamental and inseparable part of general health. The educational actions in this scope allow the creation of habits and notions of self-care, especially when developed in stimulating environments, such as schools. Therefore, carrying out oral health promotion activities during childhood becomes essential. The objective of the present study was to discuss the importance of educational-preventive oral health programs for pre-school children through the analysis of the literature and presentation of the experience report of an outreach project called Smiling at CRIARTE, held at a Day Care Center at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) since 2009 without interruptions. About 180 children in the morning and afternoon shifts aged 1 to 6 years old are contemplated monthly by this project with educational and preventive activities with the purpose of instructing, motivating and educating about oral health care. Considering the importance of the guidelines being implemented from the earliest age, and ideally, the insertion of children in oral health promotion programs should occur in the first six months of life, the project provides for early care with the intention of training the citizen to take care of his health. Thus, health education becomes a key element in the development of oral health promotion programs, since it is the process by which children construct their knowledge about the importance of oral health, as well as the development of necessary skills for them to achieve and maintain adequate oral health and to prevent oral diseases that are most prevalent in this population. In the development of the project, it was possible to observe that oral health education for preschool children may be more effective when adequate resources are used for this age group. Although most children in this study recognize the importance of oral hygiene, they are not aware of the role of diet in maintaining oral health in this group. The experience with the project, combined with data from the relevant literature review, has led to the conclusion that health promotion programs in day cares and schools should be encouraged and involve teachers, health workers, parents, dentists and other health professionals. Educational work with children in the pre-school age is more productive due to their receptivity, which facilitates the teaching-learning process, by incorporating oral health care in a spontaneous and ludic way.
