This article discusses the results of an university extension project developed in the period 2012-2013, for the prevention of Domestic Violence against Children and Adolescents (DVCA) through meetings and awareness-raising among the population served by Reference Centers for Social Care (RCSC) of Volta Redonda city. In order to do so, there were 33 meetings with the served communities with the participation of 482 users (with an average of 15 participants per meeting). After the presentation of an instructional video, the modalities of domestic violence, consequences, behavioral indicators, complaint and notification forms, and "nonviolent" models of family education were discussed. At the end of the meetings, participants answered a questionnaire assessment in which they should describe the positive and negative aspects of the work done, and add suggestions for future meetings. The analysis of these questionnaires shows that the most of participants evaluated the work positively, highlighting a better understanding of this attitude through guidance on how to proceed with the cases, and the identification of other ways of family and child pedagogy without the use of violence or physical force . There were few negative aspects listed, and the most appointed one was the time and duration of the meetings. As suggestions, the participants pointed out the need to extend such a work to the school community and other social institutions. The results show that using the proposed extension project presented here, many participants changed concepts and representations of DVCA, thus favoring its prevention from the engagement in combating this type of social problem that afflicts the lives of Brazilian children and adolescents.
