Abstract

Rabies is a viral zoonosis, cosmopolitan, characterized by compromising the Central Nervous System (CNS) such as acute progressive and lethal encephalitis. All mammals are susceptible to rabies virus and therefore can convey it. One of the main methods to control rabies is the vaccination of pets in urban areas, being this action responsible for the decrease in the number of cases of animal rabies, consequently preventing the human rabies. This study aimed to report the experience of animal rabies vaccination campaign in the region of Descalvado / SP, performed by students of the University Camilo Castelo Branco (UNICASTELO) from August to October 2009, in the municipalities of Américo Brasiliense, Descalvado, Dourado, Leme, Pirassununga, Porto Ferreira, Santa Rita do Passa Quatro e São Carlos, State of Sao Paulo, which together total about 510 622 inhabitants. In these areas, 87,257 animals were vaccinated, corresponding to an average of 1 animal vaccinated for every 6 residents, demonstrating the effectiveness of the campaign.
